What is IHE?

Unlike HL7 (or ISO, or SNOMED, or WHO, etc.), IHE is not a health informatics standards development body. Rather, IHE is a standards profiling body. IHE Profiles are implementation guides – they make standards digestible, usable, and implementable. They describe, at a conformance-testable level of detail, how a portfolio of underlying standards will be employed to address the ecosystem-wide interoperability issues associated with a specific set of healthcare use cases. IHE Profiles create re-usable, digital health building blocks by “packaging up” the 5C’s:

Care context
Content specs
Coding specs
Communications specs
Confidentiality and security specs

The target audience for an IHE profile is the entire care delivery network. This especially includes the jurisdictional governance entities that are tasked with operationalizing plug-and-play interoperability between disparate network participants. IHE is focused on taking digital health interoperability to scale and to mitigating the risks inherent in such an effort.

What is the IHE Community?

The IHE Community is a place where health care professionals and the health information industry collaborate to improve the way health care technologies and systems share information.

Hello IHE Canada Community Members: As part of the HL7 May 2024 Ballot Cycle, HL7 Intl., in parallel with IHE, is distributing the HL7/IHE Specification: Service-oriented Device Point-of-care Interoperability (SDPi) Technical Framework, Edition 1. This is essentially the same link as Helen Wu has just posted links to in this forum. While Helen has provided the links to review and comment on this item in the IHE space, I am inviting IHE Canada members to also provide their comments using the HL7 Balloting process. Here is the link to the ... for those persons who wish to review and comment on the ballot content for submission to HL7. Simply download the Ballot Package ZIP file, create a folder for the extracted files, and then extract all to that folder. This compressed folder contains an Excel spreadsheet you can use to provide your ballot comments. The spreadsheet provides extensive explanation of how to record your comments. Comments on of the ballot items are due to the HL7 Canada Council on or before May 8th. To do so... IHE Devices Technical Framework Supplement Published for Public Comment

Hello IHE Canada Community Members, The IHE Devices Technical Committee has published the following updated Technical Framework Supplement for public comment in the period from April 11 through May 11, 2024: Point-of-Care Identity Management (PCIM) - Rev. 2.0 PCIM Rev. 2.0 Highlights: The latest PCIM supplement for public comment incorporates working group efforts that resulted in simplification of the design to better align with existing system architectures to minimize roll-out time. Additional details have been added throughout and error codes were introduced. New and noteworthy changes include: The PCIM supplement is now an HTML publication authored in AsciiDoc and maintained on the IHE / DEV.PCIM GitHub repository. PCD-17 (assert association) and PCD-18 (assert disassociation) transactions were combined into a DEV-51 (communicate association state) transaction. A DEV-52 (report association state) transaction was added to reflect the manager to consumer reporting of real-time association status events. A separate transaction between the manager and consumer actors and reporter and manager actors is consistent with IHE assignments and it allows for different message content and constraints. The DEV-19 (query associations subscription) transaction is now optional and no longer includes a “snapshot” in the response. Instead, a DEV-52 sequence for all selected associations are sent from the manager to the specified consumer. The PCD-20 transaction and DREG Actor are eliminated from this specification. References to MEM DMC capabilities to address registration and reporting of device association availability have been added. The document is available at ....
